Katie Taylor has her sights set on Cameron rematch, not retirement | Boxing News

KATIE TAYLOR has dismissed any talk of retirement.

The 36-year-old is already looking ahead to her next fight date and hopes it will be a rematch against Chantelle Cameron.

Taylor suffered her first professional loss at the hands of Cameron on May 20 in Dublin. The 2012 Olympic Gold medallist moved up from lightweight to super-lightweight to challenge the 32-year-old.

On the night, which was doubled up as a homecoming for Taylor, Cameron proved too strong and too accurate over the 10-round distance.

Having had a long career and close, hard fights against Natasha Jonas, Delfine Persoon, Amanda Serrano and Cameron there had been comments from some that maybe she should retire.

“I don’t even know what retirement means. I definitely don’t feel like it’s time for me to retire,” she told RTE.

“It will happen one day in the future, but now my sights are set on securing a rematch with Chantelle.

“I take it fight by fight and year by year, but right now I’m not going to end my career like that. I’m excited to step back in there and perform. This is my passion and I’m so grateful to be doing it every day.”

The Bray Bomber revealed she is yet to watch a replay of the fight and added there is “a lot she would do differently”.

“I think the right person won. I have to take the loss and move on from it. I’m just excited to get back to America to start training again for the rematch.”

“That is part of a loss,” she said. “You have to learn from it. You always learn more from your failures and disappointments [than your victories]. That is where the growth happens during those moments.

“I will learn from this. I definitely didn’t feel myself in there. I did feel very, very tired straight away. I’ll just have to go back to the drawing board.”

Cameron meanwhile has already said she is happy to fight Taylor once again back in Ireland and would be willing to move down to her opponent’s natural weight of 135lbs.
